Bob,
Great find. Dr. Longhurst has some terrific insight into IT and really gets to the core of some issues we’re tackling in medical informatics. UI design and workflow are clearly of critical importance when it comes to medical device interfaces. It’s very insightful that Dr. Longhurst is so keenly aware of how data entry can directly impact patient health risks. An example he uses is dosing.
From watching this video one really comes away with an appreciation of his efforts to eliminate inefficient paper-based processes and not to eliminate paper.
I often get to work directly with physicians when desinging new systems. Dr. Longhurst is absolutely right that involvement of health providers is tremendously beneficial to system design and ultimately in patient care.
